Animal Print in 2021, Yay or Nay?

By Sara Antonuccio
For the past 5 seasons or so, animal print has been a steadfast trend. From the exotic savannah to deserts around the world, animals of all sorts inspire fashion designers and wearers. But has its time come to an end? Is animal print still in for 2021, or not?

The Case For Yay:
Animal print may have reached its peak in recent seasons, but even before then it was ever-present. In nearly every designer’s collection year after year, there is at least one design featuring animal print, proving that even fashion designers recognize its staying power. When you think about it that way, how could animal print ever be out?

The types of prints themselves tend to go through cycles, and this year, zebra print is in the spotlight. Good old fashioned black and white stripes are, of course, acceptable, but in the coming year, designers are mixing it up with black and yellow, some purples, and neon green.

If you’re going to wear animal print in 2021, keep these things in mind:

  • Try to choose “busy” prints
  • Mix different animal prints, such as leopard with zebra or snake with leopard
  • Instead of going with classic black and yellow for leopard or black and white for zebra, choose brighter, bolder colors

The Case For Nay:
On the other hand, while animal print will always be around, it’s not always at the forefront of collections. Zebra print has made an appearance, but it has been somewhat overshadowed by past prints that are reemerging. Large, intricate, blooming floral prints, jungle prints, plaid, and checks are the biggest featured prints. Classic, sophisticated prints are the order of the day and are set to achieve the heights that animal print reached in recent years.

We’re also heading into a year that promises new hope in the face of the world’s struggles, and that hope deserves its own style. We need a little nostalgia, and bringing back classic prints of the past serves that purpose.

If you’re going to avoid animal print in 2021, choose these instead:

  • Paisley
  • Plaid
  • Busy florals
  • Gingham
  • Argyle
  • Jungle

There are arguments both for and against wearing animal print in 2021, but the decision really comes down to what you feel comfortable in. Are you weary of the same old prints? Then it’s time to think new and ditch animal print! Do you feel more like yourself in animal prints and are unwilling to let go? Then there’s no reason to change your style! Fashion is personal, so make the choice that fits who you are.
